Kri.ni is an architectural project inspired by one of Athens’ most iconic ancient springs. In antiquity, the Kallirroi Spring was the city’s main source of drinking water, located near the Ilisos River, east of the Acropolis. Its name, meaning “beautiful flow” or “well-flowing,” reflects both its physical character and its symbolic significance, associated with weddings, purification rituals, and sacred ceremonies. Beyond its practical function, it was a social gathering point, a place where Athenians connected with each other and the city itself.

Our design translates this history into a contemporary urban context, creating four short-stay apartments in central Athens, each with a distinct layout and character. The project interprets the spring as a narrative of flow, life, and memory, blending historical references with modern living needs. Color, light, and spatial arrangement are used to create vibrant interiors that reflect both the city’s layered history and its present urban rhythm.

The sculptural quality of the project emphasizes organic forms, fluid lines, and bold color accents. Each apartment provides a unique experience, framing views of the city while integrating greenery and natural light. Glass partitions, textured surfaces, and varied materials bring a tactile richness that echoes the flowing movement of water. The apartments become intimate yet dynamic environments where residents can experience both privacy and a sense of connection to the surroundings.

Materiality is central to the design: exposed concrete, ceramic tiles, mosaics, wood, and brass combine with colorful finishes and textured surfaces to create spaces that are simultaneously contemporary and timeless. Curved and geometric forms interact with light and shadow, guiding the resident’s experience and emphasizing the narrative of flow and continuity. Every detail, from surface texture to furniture placement, contributes to a cohesive vision where past and present meet.

Kri.ni Project reinterprets Athens’ ancient spring in a contemporary urban context. Sculptural forms, vibrant materials, and fluid spaces transform everyday life into a dialogue between past and present. Each apartment offers intimacy and connection, framing views, light, and greenery. The project becomes a timeless urban retreat, where history, nature, and modern living coexist.
